Johannesburg, Feb 3:
South Africa's hopes of securing a comprehensive 5-0 whitewash were diminishing during Devon Smith's exhilarating 91, but their bowlers pegged back West Indies' frail middle-order to a challenging, but gettable, 295 for 7 in the final one-dayer in Johannesburg.
Sent in by South Africa, West Indies were immediately out of the traps with Smith belting Dale Steyn for consecutive fours past mid-off and through the covers. He lost his opening partner, Brenton Parchment, off Shaun Pollock - playing his last international - but thereafter, Smith and Shivnarine Chanderpaul dominated with a hundred stand from just 87 balls.
Given the exuberance of Smith's strokeplay, and facing a chastening 5-0 whitewash, there was a sense West Indies had nothing to lose. Smith was particularly severe on Andre Nel, carting him for a six over long-on followed by two crisp drives off the back foot through point. Steyn, who has elevated himself into Graeme Smith's most potent strike force this summer, couldn't rein in Smith who smashed him to long-off for four; over midwicket for six to bring up a 37-ball fifty, before lifting another one over square leg. West Indies were on a roll.
West Indies' 100 was brought up in the 16th over, as Chanderpaul busied himself rather anonymously in contrast to Smith, with a selection of nudges and well judged singles. And as the pair's hundred partnership was brought up from just 87 balls, West Indies were in control.
