Wiping every tear in every eye

The President of Indian Republic Smt. Pratibha Patil did well to remind the nation on 59th Republic Day the pledge of Mahatma Gandhi. The pledge "Wiping every tear in every eye" still remains unfulfilled even after over half a century of freedom. There is no denying the fact that we have made progress and have achieved a place for ourselves in the comity of developed nations. But the prosperity achieved has not percolated down below. The result is that the benefits are reaped by a chosen few rather than the poor and underpriviledged who continue to be seething under poverty and want. The rampant corruption is mostly negativing our fuller development which needs to be put down with an iron hand. No less important are the problems of terrorism and internal threats like naxalism and communalisim. We have to address these problems in a big way. Since terrorism is assuming global magnitude, it has to be faced internationally in cooperation with other nations .
