NTPC plans 600 Mw renewable energy unit

Tiruchirapalli, Jan 19: Power generation major National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is planning to generate around 600 Mw using renewable energy resources in Tamil Nadu. The PSU was aiming at generating 1,000 Mw power under renewable energy mode, and a major portion of it will be in Tamil Nadu, T Sankaralingam, chairman, NTPC, told reporters here after holding talks with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) officials yesterday A blue print would be ready shortly for a joint venture with TNEB, he added. The projects would include wind mills and bio-mass units, Sankaralingam said.

NTPC already has a joint venture with TNEB for setting up a Rs 7,500 crore thermal power plant at Ennore with a projected capacity of 1,500 Mw. He said the project was expected to be commissioned by 2010-2011.

On the hydel segement, NTPC has plans to generate at least 2,000 Mw in Himachal Pradesh before next year.

In Uttaranchal, two projects with capacities of 600 Mw and 520 Mw would be the commissioned by 2011-2012, he said.
