Think of lifeline Narmada: Develop pilgrim sites

Narmada river is lifeline of Madhya Pradesh. Its currents run the heartbeat of the state. But, are we doing justice with the holy river? Generally not as we have not been able to use and conserve its water properly. On Tuesday, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, lakhs of people took holy dip in it but whether the devotees have their devotion in its conservation or not, it could be a subject of discussion. Down the years the river has become more polluted and dirty. There are hundreds of pilgrim sites on its banks from Amarkantak to Bharooch. And work is not being done for its conservation and protection of these pilgrim sites. Even for Parikrama its banks should be conserved and protected. Devotees have to face problems due to the loose soil at the ghats and old steps. Devotees who take holy dip and swim there find themselves in danger of life. A number of people have even lost their lives. The citizens of the state love Narmada like their mother. But they spread filth and dirt as they are unaware about pollution being caused to the river. Due to pollution turtles are to be seen rarely. These turtles are facing the same situation as alligators in Chambal river. We take water from Narmada to irrigate, for power and for drinking purpose. But do not go into depth as to how its water level could be maintained to depth of 4-5 feet. There is also need to connect pilgrimage sites. From Jabalpur to Bharooch, waterway should be developed and the area from Bhedaghat to Berman, Bandra Bhan, Hoshangabad, Omkareshwar and other pilgrim sites can be connected easily. But, for this there is need to make arrangements to take the water sources and tributaries' water reach up to Narmada. It is not an impossible work. There is need to spend money on it. We can arrange it from there also. If we exploit the river then it becomes our duty to conserve it also. If a work plan is made and followed properly then it would be easier to develop water ways from Jabalpur to Bharooch. It would strengthen the development of the state and the devotees would be blessed by taking holy dips in the river Narmada.
