Bharat Ratna on demand

It was indeed funny that BJP through Lal Krishna Adwani demanded nation's highest honour of Bharat Ratna for its veteran leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee by publically raising the demand through a letter to the Prime Minister! Bharat Ratna awardees are selected only with consent of the Opposition Leader, and this is why lack of unanimity could not select any person for nation's highest civilian honour after the year 2001. Rather Lal Krishna Adwani by making his letter public has created unnecessary controversy which can weaken any chance of Atal Bihari Vajpayee being honoured with Bharat Ratna. Misuse of Bharat Ratna for political purposes like in past can and should be avoided by making selection-process public after the awardees are named on 26th January.

For a fair approach, committee to select Padma awardees must be constituted with consensus of Opposition Leader with a nominee of Opposition Leader in the committee. List of Padma aspirants should be short-listed by first seeking clearance from intelligence and tax-authorities before presenting before the selection-committee to avoid repeat-meetings to endorse new names in replacement of rejected ones by concerned authorities.
