Urban traffic continues to be chaotic

Observance of the Traffic Week (January 1 to 7) has just ended. It hasn't made an iota of difference to the chaos on the city roads. 90% of the 2-wheeler riders continue to drive without wearing helmets.

Rash, zigzag, wrong lane, against the flow of traffic and devil-may--care driving continues unabated. It is a rare 2-wheeler that is seen with only 2 riders. Most carry 3 or more. The use of cell phone is as rampant as ever despite the fact that hundreds die worldwide because of the use of cell phones while in motion.

Respect for traffic signals has not improved. Stand on any crossing or rotary. You will notice 99% vehicle owners violating the rules with impunity. No one uses dipper at night causing tremendous inconvenience to the disciplined drivers. There are any number of drivers without valid licences.

I have listed only some of the more gross violations that are committed making safe driving impossible. The police have to be firm and the citizens have to cooperate if they do not want to see more casualties on the roads.

RJ Khurana, Bhopal
