The
Non-resident Indian community has always played an important
role in India's economy. On the international scenario, the
people of Indian origin are doing quite well and bringing
laurels to the country. Indian industrialists are marking
their presence among top industrialists of the world. Inaugurating
the sixth Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas in the national capital,
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh lauded the great work being
done by Indians living abroad. However, for linking the PIOs
to India's economy, there is also need to provide them with
necessary facilities. The Prime Minister announced a proposal
to promote an `India Development Foundation' to direct overseas
Indian philanthropic efforts into human development activities
in the country. Also, the government has decided to set up
a PM's Global Advisory Council of people of Indian Origin
to draw upon the experience and knowledge of the best Indian
minds. The strides made by Indian women abroad including Indra
Nooyi, Sunita Williams, Kalpana Chawla and Jhumpa Lahiri serve
as example and inspiration for others to follow. The PM's
announcement to set up a resource centre for helping employees
working abroad is laudable. The centre would aid in solving
the difficulties being faced by Indians working abroad. Indians
living and working in Malaysia, Kenya, United Arab Emirates
and other Gulf countries remit a substantial amount of foreign
exchange and hence the decision of the Union government to
take up their cause is genuine and would bear fruits. It is
heartening to note that the PIO meet was attended by over
1,500 delegates from about 50 countries. It is held on Jan
8-9 every year and marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi from
South Africa to India.
