Absconding Orissa top cop Mohanti surrenders

Agencies

Jaipur, Jan 10: Fugitive IPS officer Bidya Bhusan Mohanti, evading police for the past several months for allegedly helping his son Bitti, a rape convict, to jump parole on Thursday surrendered in a local court.

Additional Chief Judical Magistrate (ACJM ) Rajendra Kumar Bansal remanded Mohanti, suspended Orissa DGP(Home Guards) in judicial custody and he would be lodged in the Central Jail, Jaipur.

Mohanti had gone into hiding and had been evading Rajasthan police for the past several months. Non-bailable warrants issued by the city court also could not be served on him.

On November 15 last year, a local court had declared the senior Orissa cop as an absconder and issued standing warrants against him under which he could be arrested at any time and at any place.

The court had also declared Bitti who had jump parole as an absconder and issued similar warrants against him.

The court had also sought details of the property owned by Mohanti senior who was reported to be missing since August last year.

A case was registered by Rajasthan police against the IPS officer early last year for allegedly sheltering and concealing facts relating to his son who jumped parole on December 4, 2006.

Bitti was sentenced to seven years jail term by an Alwar fast track court for raping a German woman in 2006.
