I read the letter "Neglect of Elders" of SS Chitwadgi in Central Chronicle dated 11th Dec 2007. The letter expressed deep sadness of Chitwadgi due to negligence of parents by their sons now days. Really, it is a cause for concern and we must think about the situation of our old age parents in our so-called civil society.
It is a fact that an individual slogs all through his life for the family with a view that a day would come when he can just relax in his armchair and read his favourite book and tell tales of his youthful days to the younger generation. Alas! he forgets that the loved one won't even owe a second for him in the twilight of his life.
Young people with vigour and strength forget that it's not too late for them to be in the same shoes. It's just one life that we all have, why can't we be a support to our needy old parents who are no strangers? Why can't we build a world of love for our parents who shelter all, irrespective of age.
If we respect our parents who have moulded us into a fine being, then we must hold their hands. They don't need our money or luxury; they just need a shoulder to lean. Let's come and just take oath that we never will neglect our elders and always keep them happy and joyful in their twilight of life.
There could be many reasons for this state of affairs. One is that the joint family system is disappearing. Children's focus from an early age is towards acquisition of material knowledge. They are told to compete with their colleagues. Parents too are involved in their job related works and cannot devote much time to talk with children. All this leads to frustration among the children. Not knowing the purpose of life children are confused and see the present demands as the way of life. Children should be told the laws of life that lead them to happiness. However, in our evil world, there are contrasting views. What may be right for one, may be wrong for the other party. God has made human minds to be able to discern right from wrong. Man should choose the right and shun evil. When emphasis is on selfishness, then the problems too abound. However, when the principle of life `it is more blessed to give than to receive' is followed then the children would pay attention to the welfare of their elders automatically.
