No need to book Big-B in land case, court rules

Allahabad, Dec 11: The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday ruled that no civil or criminal case is necessary against actor Amitabh Bachchan as he had given up his claim on a farmland which the UP government alleges the actor acquired fraudulently.

The Lucknow bench of Allabahad High Court allowed Bachchan to withdraw his petition against the Faizabad Additional Commissioner's order to cancel his ownership of the land in Daulatpur village of Barabanki district.

The Additional Commissioner, who has judicial powers in land disputes, had ruled that Bachchan acquired the land by claiming he is a farmer. Bachchan was given the land during the Samajwadi Party's rule in Uttar Pradesh and land revenue records were allegedly fudged for the allotment.

Bachchan reportedly used the allotment as a testimonial to establish his credentials as a farmer to buy more agricultural land in Pune, Maharashtra in the mid 1990s. Officials in Pune sent a query to the Barabanki district magistrate for authentication of this testimonial last year.

The Barabanki district magistrate cancelled the allotment on the ground that the land revenue records had been fudged

Amitabh was charged with misrepresenting facts to receive the benefit. Later, Bachchan abandoned his claim over the plot and filed a supplementary affidavit in the court requesting that no proceedings either civil, revenue or criminal be initiated against him.
