Indore, Dec 11:
Stage is set for by-polls to both Khargone Lok Sabha and Sanwer assembly elections in the state today. By polls to both these constituencies earlier being represented by the Bharatiya Janata Party, have become a prestige issue for the BJP government in the state as loosing these seats will amount to failure of the party on peoples' expectations. On the other hand, if the party manages to retain these seats, it will give an indication to the peoples' unflinching faith in the government's performance in the past four years. Of the two constituencies, the Bharatiya Janata Party enjoys a slight edge over the Congress candidate in Khargone, while Sanwer promises to give a tough fight between the BJP and the Congress.
In Khargone the party has fielded its old horse and `sitting' MP Krishna Murari Moghe. He is pitted against Arun Yadav of the Congress who is seeking his nomination from Khargone for the first time. A green horn in politics, Arun Yadav, better known for his political lineage as he happens to be the son of former state deputy chief minister and president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, Subhash Yadav, more than anything else is banking on the political legacy of his father. Besides the other issue which he exploited during his electoral campaign is that of his being a local candidate unlike the BJP.
These virtues apart, there are many odds stashed against him. In case of low turnout of voters in Khargone by poll, the chances of the Congress wresting this seat would become slimmer and in all likelihood the percentage of polling in Khargone is unlikely to cross 40% mark, given the fact only 48 % of the voters in the constituency have so far been distributed photo identity cards which are prerequisite for casting votes.
Since the Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes and other poor sections of the people constitute majority of the Congress vote bank, they will unlikely to exercise their voting rights because of lack of valid documents and an awareness for the same, said a political observer adding that in that eventuality, the BJP will stand a better chance at the husting, considering the fact that those who form their vote bank have apparently higher level of political awareness and will go to the polling booths to cast votes.
The other odd facing the Congress candidate in Khargone, is dissent within his own party. A section of the Congress leaders and workers apparently opposed to the candidature of Arun Yadav, released posters some days back as how the region had become a fiefdom of the Congress leader Subhash Yadav, his son Arun Yadav. Posters showing subsequent generations of Subhash Yadav taking reigns of the region in the next 30 years, were issued in the names of those senior and established party leaders who are no more.
Under the given scenario, it is advantage BJP in Khargone. The BJP candidate Krishna Murari Moghe boasts of carrying out various development works in the constituency during his term as member of Parliament. Besides his being a seasoned politician and clean image that he enjoys, will also go in his favour, a keen political observer informed this correspondent.
As far as Sanwer by poll is concerned, both the Congress and the BJP candidates seem to be on equal footing. What seemed to be a clear edge for the Congress candidate Tulsiram Silawat till sometime back, has been wiped out by the BJP after uncertainty looming the Bharatiya Janshakti Party amidst rumour of Uma Bharati joining the BJP and differences with the Bharatiya Janshakti Party over withdrawal of candidates from Gujarat elections.
