Uproar against helmet totally wrong

No right-thinking person will support uproar against helmet by 2-wheeler driver and also his/her companion at the back. In fact the media, particularly electronic media, is unduly highlighting those opposing this move. This way media is doing great dis-service to society.

A local TV channel interviewed and highlighted only those opposed to the move. The interviewees included a 70-year oldie who said 'how can I have a helmet on and also ask my wife to have the helmet?' My counter question to that person is 'fine, you are inviting death not only for yourself but also for your wife'. I am sure that person, like thousands of persons from Bhopal visiting Delhi, shall have a helmet while sitting at the back of the two-wheeler. Why? Because it is mandatory in Delhi and anyone flouting it is severely penalised.

There is a saying 'one's own friend and also enemy is oneself only'. Helmet is surely a safeguard to the head in the event of an accident. We must accept this reality. Anyone opposing it for not putting helmet on is inviting death for himself/herself and acting as his own enemy.

Police must ruthlessly enforce this. Surprise checks and at odd hours together with heavy penalty will mean everyone in Bhopal shall have a helmet. Large-size hoardings indicating deaths due to non-use of helmets must also be erected throughout the town. Such hoardings are better than hoardings on birthdays, appointments and arrivals of leaders. Latter hoardings must be banished once and for all.
