Selection meeting may go ahead without Vengsarkar

Agencies

Bangalore, Dec 4: Amid continuing stand-off between the BCCI and chairman of selection committee Dilip Vengsarkar, national selectors will meet here on Wednesday to name the side for the the third and final cricket Test against Pakistan and pick the squad for the upcoming tour of Australia.

Peeved at the BCCI guidelines which bar him from writing newspaper columns, Vengsarkar has threatened to quit from his post and in such a case, Wednesday's meeting might go ahead in the chief selector's absence.

There is no possibility for major a change in the squad for the third Test against Pakistan, considering the way India dominated the second Test in Kolkata before being held to a draw.

Paceman S Sreesanth, nursing a shoulder injury, has already been ruled out of the third Test, while RP Singh continues to be plagued by a side strain that makes him doubtful as well.

In such a case, seamer Irfan Pathan and rookie Ishant Sharma would be hoping to return to the team to bolster the depleted attack.

Meanwhile, selectors might spring a few surprises while picking the squad for the Australia tour.
