What is cooking up in our neighbourhood?

Television scoops of a distraught Benazir, in the midst of charred bodies and blood strewn all around, showed how dangerous a reception was arranged for her by the Pakistani leadership. President General Parvez Musharraf's intention, by providing the kind of a treatment for both his political opponents Nawaz Sharief and Bhutto, was really unpredictable, till the last moment. If the landing and then packing off to Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) of Nawaz Sharief was unthought of, then the bloody reception to Ms Bhutto was also equally tragic and unthinkable. The General perhaps knew pretty well that Ms Bhutto would certainly get massive welcome in Karachi as her PPP supporters were quite buoyant. They came out in large numbers to give a grand reception to her, but for the bloody two blasts, one of which was so close to Ms Bhutto's motorcade that her escape was nothing but a miracle. The whole Pakistan was shell-shocked. And the General, as usual, condemned the attack, which is quite customary for him, having known everything quite well in advance. That was the reason, the government later made it pretty clear that they had already warned Ms Bhutto to delay her home-coming for some more time...

But, Ms Bhutto, knowing reasonably well those things can never happen without the knowledge of the government, demanded for the head of the ISI Chief. But, she should have known that only recently the former ISI Chief has been elevated as the Army Chief and the new ISI chief also would be a man of both the Army General as well as the President General Pervez Musharraf's affirmed loyalty. Ms Bhutto should have also known the fact that the ISI and the Al-Qaeda both work in tandem to achieve their common goal. And that common goal is to be deeply known to be understood. As far as the US leadership is concerned, they too know it. In fact, they honestly want it to go that way only. After all, the CIA and the ISI know each other's role well. In that only the incumbent US President - George W Bush can pull on his presidency till November 2008. And here lies now a point to ponder over for all the right thinking people living in this part of Asia in particular and the world leadership in general.

But the surprise of all the earlier deceptive schemes of Gen Musharraf is his latest salvo by clamping emergency that has put Pakistan now in a complete turmoil. He turned now as the worst of dictator a la the Zia-ul-Haq way and even the US is now taken by surprise. The ground reality in Pakistan is very much a cause for worry as Pakistan is a nuclear power. The hawkish Al Qaeda is placed next door and its leadership would definitely try to bank on this disturbance. India need to take all the precautions and its defence and foreign policy managers must be equally alert to tackle any situation that may eventually emerge as the fall back of the Pakistan boil up.
