Kalmadi allays fears about CWG preparation

New Delhi, Nov 20: Despite the Commonwealth Games Federation expressing concern over preparations for the mega event to be staged in Delhi in 2010, the organisers have denied that work is behind schedule.

"There is nothing to worry about and preparations are on track," Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi said here on Tuesday.

He said it was unfair to say that work on developing infrastructure for the sporting extravaganza had not started.

"If one cannot see a physical structure, it does not mean that things are behind schedule. Work is always going on behind the scenes," Kalmadi, who is also the President of the Indian Olympic Association, said.

The CGF Co-ordination Committee had made its dissatisfaction evident during its visit in May this year.

Kalmadi, however, reiterated that the construction work at most of the Games venues and athletes' village will be in full swing by the end of this year and the stadia would be ready by December 31, 2009.

He was speaking at the signing of the 'Principles of Mutual Assistance' between the organising committees of the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2012 London Olympics.

He also claimed that CGF was satisfied with the progress.

"We briefed the CGF Governing Council and General Assembly about the preparations and delegates seemed pleased with it," Kalmadi, a Member of Parliament, said.

"The General Operational Plan with all stakeholders is in place and regular meetings will start next month. The CGF Co-ordination Committee will also be in Delhi for another appraisal in January," he said.
