The Central Government, with a view to encourage higher education and research in the field of science and technology, has decided to setup two Indian Science Education and research institutes. A whopping amount of Rs 500 crores would be spent on these institutes. The decision was taken in the Union Cabinet meeting on Thursday. Madhya Pradesh is one of the States besides Thiruvananthapuram where these institutes are to be set up. The Union human resource development ministry would initiate in setting up these institutes where courses for graduate and post-graduate levels, in biology, mathematics, computer, physics and chemistry would be taught. It is certain the institute would provide opportunities to the talented and aspiring students to shape their future in these fields. Other high level centres of learning in the State include Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Indore, Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) at Bhopal and others at Jabalpur and Gwalior. In absence of centres of higher learning, students have to go out of the state and abroad. It entails huge expenditure too. In another important decision the Union Cabinet gave its approval for extension of the tenure of Short Service Commissioned Officers of Armed Force Medical Services (AFMS) from existing 10 years to 14 years.
The Cabinet also extended the time scale promotions of AFMS Short Service Commissioned Officers as applicable to permanent Commissioned officers owing to the extended tenure. This decision will help mitigate shortage of officers in the AFMS. It will bring about a parity with the existing time scale promotions available to the permanent Commissioned Officers and meet the career aspirations of AFMS SSC Officers. The Cabinet also approved lifting of the ban on export of superior quality non-basmati rice. The decision would exempt export of non-basmati rice priced over $425 a ton from the ban.
